You want to karate quit? Again?
.
How many students do you know that quit only to return for a little while and then quit again?
.
Here are a few reasons why people quit: They get bored with it. Financial issues. They move to a different area. They realize it requires more effort as it gets progressively more difficult. They don’t like the instructor. Of course there are many more.
.
So, are the martial arts are a waste of time….. unless you love it?
.
Nobody really ‘needs’ the martial arts today, perhaps beyond it being good exercise, or a way to destress from your hectic daily life. You might think martial arts will help you with self-defense. In most cases, it won’t (insert reason here).
.
The truth is you don’t need martial arts to survive in today’s society. The vast majority of the population get by just fine without training in the martial arts….. and the martial arts takes a lot of time, dedication….. and money.
.
Personally, I think the martial arts offers more than just a workout and self-defense. At least in my experience. It toughens you physically, mentally, forces you to think about how you learn. It grounds you in reality, gets you thinking tactically and strategically. You might even find some philosophy in it.
.
If you find the right school or dojo (avoiding the ’strongest’ McDojo), you can learn real self-defense, and that can lead to confidence, a greater sense of calm, even if you never have to use it.
.
Practicing regularly, trying to understand concepts, movements, trying to look for the flaws in techniques, what works, what doesn’t… it can make you change your way of thinking.
.
It can help you to understand how to approach people, it may help you to feel calmer, feel more secure about yourself… its worth it for those things alone.
.
But, the core belief in every single martial art is self-improvement, and the most heretical thing you can do is quit.
.
However, if your hearts not in it, if you are doing something you don’t love, you’re not investing in yourself….. then quit. Because doing what you don’t love is a waste of your time….. and mine. The last thing I want in my dojo is someone who isn’t there to challenge themselves, to work hard….. and have fun.
