“Don’t let what you can’t do stop you from doing what you can do.”

People learn fast. When you realize that once you quit one thing, life gets easier. Why? Because all you have to do is give up, rather than deal with the hardship of what it takes to succeed.
.
Being labelled a “quitter” is a tough label to shake. Breaking a promise is a big deal; failing to follow through should never be brushed off. Quitting is never insignificant.
.
Do kids (and parents) today quit too easily? Perseverance is an important survival skill. Tenacity is a strong word for life. Thomas Edison famously “failed” 10,000 times on his way to inventing the light bulb. What if he had simply quit along the way?
.
This is a big life-lesson opportunity. If children don’t learn to follow through now when they have your support, how will they become equipped to follow through as adults, when they must rely on what you’ve taught them? And as an adult, if you allow them to quit, and you quit too, what is that telling them?
.
Quitting on impulse is never the right choice. The more often children quit before completing a task, the less likely they are to finish the next one. Quitting, like perseverance, can quickly form a habit. Challenge your children (and yourself) not to give up too easily.
.
Perseverance often makes the critical difference between whether kids succeed or fail. Will they have the inner strength to keep on, or be plagued by self-defeat, unwilling to give it their best?
.
Children (and parents) who learn to bounce back and not let setbacks get them down, have gained a valuable skill for life. If your children are to succeed in this competitive world, they must learn to hang in there and not quit. And this goes for parents too. Parents who want their kids to stick with a task set the right expectations. Be a good role model, show your kids you don’t give up on a task even when things get difficult.
.
Research shows that kids who persist and excel recognize that success comes from hard work and practice, not luck or money. In fact, if kids believe that performance is due to effort, they will be less likely to give up and will work harder when the going gets tough.
.
While letting your kids (or yourself) quit may seem easier, it may teach them it’s OK to quit or take the easy way out. If you let your child quit too quickly, they’ll never have the chance to experience success, through hard work, tenacity and perseverance. And what does that say about you as a parent? Giving up is the easy way out, instead of really confronting the problem. 👊🥋
