Hit from where your hands are.

In the dojo recently we talked about “momentum” in a strike, punch or similar technique. Momentum can simply be defined as; “mass in motion.” All objects have mass; so if an object is moving, then it has momentum.
.
Our discussion was based upon moving our hands in an opposite direction to our target (moving away), in order to create a “greater” force, in the direction of our target. Simply, moving the hands backwards, to move forwards with more force. “Winding up” the technique.
.
If you look at it at the level of direct physics of a body (fist) in motion, yes, loading the punch or strike and swinging the arm, would end up having more velocity, therefore, be more powerful.
.
However. This has several problems. One of which is called “telegraphing”.
.
Practitioners can easily telegraph their punches by winding their hands and shoulders back. The problem with this is that your opponent can then see the strike coming! …… When this happens, there’s almost no chance that you’ll effectively land that punch or strike. Given notice, they will be able to move out of the way, or deflect it.
.
So, how do you fix this problem and HIDE your punches or strikes?
.
The idea is simple: Hit from where your hands are……
.
Making the path of your hand to its target as direct as possible means you spend less energy and will hit faster. Crucially, it is almost impossible for the attacker to detect it until it’s too late.
.
The ability to strike like this is a highly efficient way to attack, but it is an acquired skill that you must train to get right.
.
When practiced by someone that knows body positioning and proper muscle tension/relaxation, they can push kinetic energy from the floor all the way to the target with explosive force (kinetic chain). This is the preferred method.
.
Avoid telegraphing, loading, and cocking the hand or arm in the opposite direction to the target, to create power. It’s just not effective in reality, and it’s a massive sign of your intention. The more unpredictable your techniques are, the better the effect on your opponent. ??
