How to be unshakeable in your enthusiasm for teaching the martial arts.
.
Students can tell when we’re just going through the motions. But how can you summon the energy to teach with passion; day in, day out?
.
Firstly there is authenticity: There are times when we have to act excited about teaching a lesson when perhaps we feel tired, or have to act enthusiastic about small bits of progress students make, when we may feel frustrated that they haven’t made larger gains. We have to act like we are calm and in control when there are days we may feel like screaming. And, we also have to act like we are interested in teaching stuff we may not enjoy teaching.
.
If you don’t tie in pieces of your personality whenever possible, you’re going to find yourself counting the moments until you can get “out of the dojo”, and be yourself again. You’ve got to find ways to express yourself, and your personality; be authentic.
.
Secondly there is vision: Your vision as a teacher is what should define your value and your measure of success. You have to have a clear, driving focus that compels you to do what you do every day and helps you tap into intrinsic motivation.
.
Then there is reciprocal energy: You see, when you have a reciprocal energy, your connections with students motivate and energize YOU. You learn how to take time to really enjoy the students and empower them. It is incredibly enjoyable to teach those who want to learn and are actively engaged in their learning.
.
Remember that passion cannot be faked. When someone has a passion for the martial arts – it shows. In fact, it almost oozes out of their pores. People with such a passion will be willing to share their enthusiasm and love of the martial arts with others.
.
An excellent black belt doesn’t necessarily make an excellent teacher. While it’s important to have passion and a desire for excellence in one’s skills; to be a good teacher requires an ability to communicate a theory and instruction in a clear, concise and easy to understand method. You should possess incredible patience, and an energetic and motivational manner.
.
Finally, you must have a positive attitude towards your students; and yourself. Praise them regularly, praise effort and accomplishment, not ability……. Oh and don’t send the wrong message…… Look like a martial artist, be professional; there’s something quite empowering in wearing a clean, crisp karate-Gi….. One more thing….. don’t forget to have fun. ??
