“If someone asks what Karate is, the answer is Kata.”

“If someone asks what Karate is, the answer is Kata. Karate is the act of inheriting a Kata from the master. It is the act of guarding the Kata inherited from the master. It is to nurture someone and make someone grow.” – Yamashiro Yoshitomo Okinawa Kenpo

What is the true meaning of the Martial Arts?
.
Many say that fighting is not the ultimate aim of the martial arts. We all know that Karate is so much more than self-defense – to some, it is a way of life, a way of living.
.
In life, you must keep your focus, stay grounded, be aware of the world around you. Every single day is a wonderful opportunity to grow and learn. The more you train the more obvious this will become. When you step into the dojo – it isn’t about being perfect. It isn’t about the outcome. It’s about growth. It’s about the journey.
.
Everyday is an opportunity to grow and learn. But this won’t merely happen by chance. You have to make the choice to learn each and every day.
.
Sometimes it’s good to just shut up and listen….. Just sit and listen. When was the last time you just listened to someone? I’m talking about just taking in the words that are being said (or written), and allowing it to settle into your mind….. Forget about a response. There is no need for you to interrupt anyone with your ideas, concepts, or “brilliant” insights. Be there to learn. Be quiet.
.
In time you will get it. And do you know what happens when you do finally get it? Your karate will grow, it expands. Guess what?…. Life is no different. Your struggle is an opportunity to grow and expand.
.
Karate is there for self-protection, containing pragmatic combative principles, movements and techniques. But it is also there to teach you to endure hardships, to persevere in your aims in life, and to never give up or give in.
.
“It’s ‘kyudomugen’ (there is no end to the way of martial arts). There is no goal to this. There is only self-training to be done forever.“ – Higa Minoru 10th dan Shorin Ryu
.
Perhaps the true meaning behind the martial arts, is less about fighting, and more about developing yourself to your ultimate potential. ??
