“Karate is not only physical techniques but a philosophy of life. Age is not important for someone who really wants to train in karate. Karate is a life journey, not a destination. It’s only when we look at it as a destination that we will stop training.” ?? ~ Minoru Higa 10th dan Shorin Ryu Kyudokan.
One of the things that characterizes Okinawan karate is the sense of it being a lifelong practice. It’s not just for the young, where competition, fighting and tournaments are important. The idea of Okinawan karate is that it is part of a lifelong practice of health and wellbeing. Obviously, the original point of karate is self-protection, and staying healthy. But there’s also this idea that it protects your day-to-day health. It is part of your daily routine, and one of those key components that I think contributes to longevity, and good health, right through to your senior years. I think that is strongly characterized in Okinawan karate.
