“Look for the answer inside your question.”

“A teacher, a really good sensei, is never a ‘giver’ of ‘truth’; he is a guide, a ‘pointer’ to the truth that the student must discover for himself.” – Bruce Lee
.
This quote by Bruce Lee doesn’t mean that a teacher will lie and lead you down the wrong path (or shouldn’t anyway). What this portion of the quote means is the teacher will not give you all of the answers.
.
Learning should not be mere imitation, or learning by rote, nor should it be about accumulating and regurgitating fixed knowledge. Learning is a constant process of discovery, a process without end.
.
Unfortunately, most students in the martial arts are conformists. When having reached a basic level of understanding, instead of learning to depend on themselves for a further, deeper understanding, they blindly follow their instructors, finding security in imitation. The product of this imitation is a dependent mind. Independent inquiry, which is essential to genuine understanding, is often not encouraged.
.
Life is in constant movement – often random; it is in constant change and not stagnation.
.
‘’[..] a skillful teacher might spur his student’s growth by confronting him with certain frustrations.” – Bruce Lee
.
During the process of learning there are times when you may think; “this is stupid”, again and again, until you suddenly get that “aha” moment… and finally realize why you had to go through those seemingly “stupid” exercises and drills, that don’t seem to make sense. Forcing you to realize that you already had the answers inside of yourself. You just needed someone to bring them out.
.
“Teachers open the door, but you must enter by yourself” – Chinese Proverb…. This proverb means that a teacher can introduce a student to knowledge, but the student must apply that knowledge himself or herself.
.
Things always seem hard to do until you know and understand why you are doing them. The difficult part is just getting there.
.
No one can connect the dots for you. Many times, you can’t connect them yourself. When the conditions are right, and the timing is right, maybe with a little nudging from a teacher, things fall into place and you get it, and you finally say; “Aha! How did I not see that before?” ??
